    Fact or Fiction?

Agents that claim to be “environmentally friendly” are also environmentally sustainable.

Fiction. Terms like “environmentally friendly,” “eco-friendly,” and “green” are marketing catch phrases that are not actually backed up by data and objective standards. From an environmental perspective, sustainability is described in the UN Paris Climate Change Agreement as an action that promotes “the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions while fostering sustainable development”.

An agent that has zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) alone doesn’t meet this definition – Global Warming Potential (GWP) and atmospheric lifetime must also be considered. G WP is typically measured against a CO2 baseline, where GWP of 1 is the greenhouse gas impact of 1 pound of CO2. Some agents with zero ODP have GWPs over 3,000 – with a significant environmental impact – while Novec 1230 fluid has a G WP less than 1, making it more sustainable than even CO2.

When assessing the sustainability of an agent, make sure you’ve selected clear, measurable metrics in line with international regulatory standards.
